Pre-existing Basement Faults Controlling Deformation in the Jura Mountains Fold-and-Thrust Belt: Insights from Analogue Models

چکیده
Pre-existing faults in the mechanical basement are believed to play an important role controlling deformation of thin-skinned Jura Mountains fold-and-thrust belt, which constitutes northernmost extension European Alps. We use brittle-viscous analogue models investigate influence frontal and oblique steps on subsequent evolution structures during shortening. Vertical offset between two rigid baseplates (simulating basement) causes formation reverse grabens overlying brittle layers that not reactivated However, baseplate localise deformation, causing a temporary frontward propagation early stage inhibiting afterwards. Downward induce very strong localisation foster fault-bend folds. Models featuring upward develop step-controlled pop-up with imbricated fronts viscous ramps shorten dynamically progressive contraction. find increases both higher step-throws lower obliquity (α) strike step (e.g. α = 0°). With increasing step-throws, 30° 45° upward-steps lead characteristic imbrication cover laterally confined thrust-slices step-parallel oblique-thrusts, rotate up 15° about vertical axis over time. Step-controlled backthrusts preceding do show notable rotation hence constitute excellent indicators for orientation upward-steps. The topographic patterns oblique-step resemble individual Internal (i.e. Pontarlier Vuache fault zones, nappe system SE Oyonnax Chasseral anticline), strongly suggesting pre-existing NNE-SSW NW-SE striking controlled cover. Our model results may be applied other belts worldwide formed above structures.

Kinematics of the Dena Fault and Its Relation to Deep-Seated Transverse Faults in Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt, Iran
The NNW-trending Dena Fault, with 140 km length, cuts the major structures of Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt in Borujen region. The fault has divided the region in two zones, in which different structural, andmorphological features as well assedimentation and seismtectonic characteristics have developed. This study presents a new interpretation for the kinematics of Dena Fault based on field evidence....
متن کاملCollapse structures in Dowgonbadan region, Zagros fold- thrust belt
Allochthonous masses are common structures in Zagros fold-thrust belt. They are generally considered as collapse structures formed by the influence of gravity and in rock units with competency contrast. However, large allochthonous masses mapped in Dowgonbadan area in Dezful Embayment near the Mountain Front Fault (MFF) of Zagros show characteristics different from the belt common collapse stru...

متن کاملRelative timing of calcite twinning strain and fold-thrust belt development; Hudson Valley fold-thrust belt, New York, U.S.A
Coarse-grained limestone samples were collected across the Hudson Valley Fold-Thrust Belt with the aim of determining the temporal and spatial relationship between calcite twinning strain and fold-thrust belt development. The majority of the samples have well defined oblate strain ellipsoids with the maximum shortening axes (e3) perpendicular to bedding strike, and e3 magnitudes that range from...
متن کاملDeformation in the Jura Mountains (France): First results from semi-permanent GPS measurements
New GPS estimates of relative motion across the Jura Mountain Belt with respect to the Eurasian Plate indicate less than 1 mm/ yr of convergence, considerably less than previous estimates. Velocity uncertainties have been evaluated by several methods and range from 0.2 to 0.5 mm/yr for the semi-permanent stations. The major, statistically-significant strain feature inferred by the Jura GPS meas...
